Description:

If you were looking for the trailer for the new Michael Bay movie, you've got the wrong number. Transformations are rotations, reflections, and translations. Coordinates may be different after a transformation, but the shape has the same size, area, angles, and line lengths. Shmooptimus Prime to the rescue!

Transformations, a la Shmoop. No matter how spectacular you are…

00:09

…and we’re sure you’re pretty spectacular… …sometimes you just need a new… you.

00:14

Maybe you’ve been thinking about getting brown highlights.

00:18

Or perhaps it’s time to start speaking to everyone in a British accent.

00:24

Change is good… …most of the time, at least.

00:27

Well, you’re not the only one who feels good after an extreme makeover.

00:32

Suppose for a moment… that you are a two dimensional shape located on a coordinate

00:36

plane.

00:38

Sounds like fun, right? Well then it’s time for a transformation.

00:41

A transformation involves a shape being flipped, shifted or spun around…

00:46

…so it can get a little excitement in its life.

00:49

Of course, mathematicians have come up with some fancier names for these maneuvers…

00:53

When a shape is turned in one direction or another, it is called rotation.

01:01

Car tires…

01:02

…a Lazy Susan…

01:03

…even our planet …all adhere to this rotational movement.

01:08

If a shape instead maintains its orientation but gets shifted somewhere else – up, down

01:13

or side-to-side…

01:14

… then we call that translation. Be careful to keep tabs on your shapes at

01:19

all times when performing this process…

01:21

…as you don’t want them to wind up lost in translation.

01:24

And, as the best things always come in threes…

01:29

… there is one more type of transformation – reflection.

01:35

As you might guess, reflection occurs when you take a 2D shape and… flip it.

01:40

Eh… more like this. And wouldn’t you know it – our little

01:44

triangle friend is so much happier now that he’s gotten to reinvent himself!

01:48

So step into the salon…

01:53

…and get ready for your transformation.

01:55

You’ll love the way you look. We guarantee it.
