Common Core Standards
Grade 5
Reading RI.5.8
Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text, identifying which reasons and evidence support which point(s).
This standard builds on the skills students should have learned from fourth grade by giving them not one but multiple points to explain in the same response. The easiest way to get this Common Core Standard across is to ask students, "What reasons and evidence does the author give when stating ________ and ________?" The best answers should be organized in such a way that the reasons and evidence for the points are addressed one point at a time.
